- Cyperus fulgens, yellow nut-grass -
!Hanni is an important staple that is found throughout the Etosha area. The plant has erect, shiny green leaves. The corms (!handi) are about 12 mm in diameter, with brown, papery scales, which are removed from the nut-like central part. Unlike ||kháéb (Iridaceae sp.) and uinan, !hanni is available throughout the year. The corms do not become bitter in the dry season. Fresh corms can be eaten raw, but the older ones taste better when roasted. Guinea fowl and warthog also consume !hanni.
