Uinan

- Cyanella sp. -

Uinan are widely distributed throughout Etosha. They require a specific soft soil, and are found in large numbers in such locations. In former years, following the rainy season, the women of a family group would go for several days to areas in which uinan were known to grow in abundance. ‡Kharios (Gemsbokvlakte) was an important uinan collection area. The women would collect large quantities and bring them back to the permanent settlements. The white bulbs were roasted or boiled as they could be quite bitter when eaten raw. During the dry season it was difficult to find uinan, the parts of the plants that grow above the ground having by then disappeared.
